Hello there,
My name is Danny Gurung and this is my film, everybody.. It’s about everybody. Which means it’s about us.
My intention was to set out to understand how we live in this city of New York,
in this world, how we share it. What I ended up with were hundreds of moments. Mostly, they belong to strangers, to kids and cops, to the city herself. Because we live this life together, witnessing each other’s everyday victories and embarrassments, feeling them too. This project is a small reminder of that bigger, beautiful phenomenon.
We all have a version of this movie. I call it a documentary but really it’s what plays in our heads after a long day of walking or ambling night out. We close our eyes to see what we saw, the places we went and the faces we went there with. It’s the hundreds of things we think over and over. It’s all the emotions, pure as color. It’s where memory meets imagination to become our experience, a singular expression of some collective source. Think of how light refracts or how a great story happens again in every telling.
New York could be anywhere else in the world, any place that you begin to live with confidence and consequence, we all have somewhere(s) to grow into. I was just willing to be lucky, this place was my first pick.
I laugh a little thinking about who will read this and who will watch this crude, sparkling thing. I don’t know who you are but I know who we are, as people, and I know how it makes me feel. It touches I love you, reaches deeper into I am you.
Love/am you,
Danny G.
